EGO ELLA MAY HOW LONG 'TIL WE'RE HOME

South Londoner Ego Ella May has grown with her hometown's jazz scene, working with the likes of Oscar Jerome, Joe Armon-Jones (Ezra Collective), Wu-Lu and Eddie Hick (Sons of Kemet), recording with live instruments in an impromptu jam-setting. Her neo-soul and contemporary jazz compositions are tranquil and are often lyrically conscious of our socio-political landscape. Her new single 'How Long 'Til We're Home' was released alongside a touching video and follows from her debut album So Far, which was released last year. The new single sees neo-soul guitar licks and a round bass sound resonate over a straightforward electronic beat which turns into one with live drum sounds and sparkly percussion. Velvety backing vocals fill the soundscape with a lovely warmth, whilst Ella May's rich, chocolatey voice gently and unconfrontationally objects to the inequalities our society faces: "disappointed by government, rich get richer as poor ones weep, same depiction on every screen". It seems like 'How Long 'Til We're Home' has landed with perfect timing, further highlighting the disparity of wealth in this country which has recently been brought to light. -Ellie Rose-Davies
